SUFFERING FROM DRY, ICHY, RED OR BURNING EYES?

Understanding Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease (DED) is a common condition that occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when your tears are poor quality, leading to an unstable tear film. This instability can cause inflammation, irritation, and damage to the surface of the eye, impacting both comfort and vision.

DED can affect anyone, and untreated dry eye can interfere with daily activities such as reading, screen use, and driving. Early recognition and proper treatment are essential to maintain healthy eyes and clear vision.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a leading root cause of dry eye disease and is often associated with skin diseases such as rosacea, a chronic, inflammatory skin condition which affects the facial skin and eyelids.

Studies show that up to 80% of patients with rosacea experience MGD, which contributes to DED by preventing the glands from producing the oils necessary to maintain a healthy tear film.

Symptoms and Treatment Options

In the early stages, MGD may not cause noticeable symptoms. Over time, patients may experience:

  • Stinging, burning, or scratchy eyes
  • Redness or sensitivity to light
  • Watery or blurred vision
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses or driving at night
  • Stringy mucus or eyelid inflammation, which can lead to styes or chalazion

Standard approaches include warm compresses, artificial tears, antibiotic or steroid eye drops, and oral antibiotics. While these methods can help manage symptoms, long-term relief often requires addressing the underlying inflammation and gland dysfunction—which is where advanced therapies like IPL come in.
